Progressive Judaism

Progressive Judaism offers a vision that combines Jewish ritual observance, worship and study with active engagement in contemporary life, and embraces all positive aspects of the secular world.

Progressive Judaism embraces all aspects of Jewish civilization, history and culture -- including music, painting and sculpture, crafts theatre, dance, cinema, literature and historiography, which it views as essential components of Jewish identity and Jewish continuity.

Progressive Judaism views all ritual Mitsvot as a means to a greater insight, understanding and compassionate conduct—and not as ends in themselves. It therefore encourages a range of religious practice and expression among its members and values active engagement with our tradition, not rote observance.

Progressive Judaism stresses the ethical dimensions of our religious confidence with respect to our personal conduct and our interaction with family, friends, spouses, the workplace, our community and the society at large. Our movement in Judaism places great emphasis on the virtue of Tikkoun Olam, repair of the world, and demands that its members struggle to create a more just and equitable society, one that rejects oppression, discrimination and injustice of any kind.

Progressive Judaism practices full gender equality and embraces Jews of all social, ethnic, cultural and familial backgrounds. Moreover, this vision of inclusion strongly influences its approach to Jewish ritual and Jewish text.

Progressive Judaism actively welcomes those who wish to explore Judaism and consider joining themselves to our people and do so without any pressure or coercion on our part.

Progressive Judaism reaffirms its profound connection to the State of Israel, our Jewish national homeland, and prizes its connection to our sisters and brothers in the Israeli liberal movements. Moreover, we consider literacy in Modern Hebrew and knowledge of contemporary Israeli literature and culture to be an important goal. To this end we will do everything possible to encourage our members to travel and study in and about Israel on a regular basis.

Progressive Judaism affirms the concept of “God wrestling” with respect to Biblical and Rabbinic texts, encouraging critical thinking, nuanced debate and intellectual creativity. Our expression of Judaism believes that the study of Jewish text is a fundamental life-long process through which we can gain new insights and connections to our contemporary lives each time we engage our tradition.
