{"id":25783,"date":"2023-09-18T20:59:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T18:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kehilatgesher.org\/a-good-deed\/"},"modified":"2023-09-18T20:59:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T18:59:03","slug":"a-good-deed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kehilatgesher.org\/en\/a-good-deed\/","title":{"rendered":"A Good Deed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">A Good Deed for a Good Year &#8212; The rabbi&#8217;s challenge<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yiv3514577989m_1934883616538864745gmail-_x0000_s1027\"><\/span>On Yom Kippur,\u00a0our Haftara is a passage from the book of Isaiah, which essentially says that God does not want us to fast, if our fasting is not sincere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">Instead, God through Isaiah teaches:<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">&#8220;No, this is the fast I desire; to unlock fetters of wickedness, and untie the cords of the yoke and to let the oppressed go free; to break off every yoke.\u00a0 It is to share your bread with the hungry and to take the wretched poor into your home; when you see the naked, to clothe them, and do not ignore your own flesh.&#8221; (58:6-7)<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">This year we ask all of our members to take the following challenge&#8230; donate the cost of the meals that you would have normally eaten, if the day had not been Yom Kippur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"yiv3514577989MsoNormal\">Write out a check\u00a0for that amount (to the order of \u201cKehilat Gesher\u201d) or put the equivalent cash into a sealed envelope, labeled &#8220;<u>rabbi&#8217;s challenge<\/u>&#8220;.
